It is very important to choose the correct opening direction for proper door installation.

The diagrams above should help you understand the way prehung doors are "handed" for door installation.

The above diagrams presume the outside of the door is towards the top of the page and the inside towards the bottom.

Here is another trick to remember how door opening direction works.  Stand with your arms folded across your chest, Indian style. Now, without moving your upper arm, let your right hand swing away from your body, this is how a right opening door works - neat huh! Now of course the opposite is true, let your left hand swing away from your body and that is how a left door opening direction works.

Of course, a double door has two doors with opposite opening directions.  However on a double door installation it is the first of the doors to open that determines if we call the pair left or right opening.
